Aniya Brown (Communications Associate), born and raised in New York, has been a fierce advocate for racial and social justice since beginning her advocacy journey almost a decade ago.
During her undergrad years, Aniya ran communications for PERIOD. @ UCSD, an organization that worked to provide unhoused women with menstrual products in San Diego and eradicate the stigma against menstruating. She then went on to volunteer as the Policy Coordinator for the national chapter. Aniya was also an active member of her university’s College Democrat club throughout the duration of her college years, serving as both a Volunteer Coordinator and an Advisor.
While working and volunteering for numerous Democratic candidates and elected officials, Aniya held multiple California statewide positions, including the California College Democrats Communications Deputy. In 2020, she served as a Field Director for a San Diego City Council candidate where she helped to lead a successful field program, including making critical pivots to respond to COVID-19 pandemic. The campaign resulted in a historic victory to elect the first Democrat to the district seat.
After transitioning from the political sphere to the nonprofit sector, Aniya continued to manage digital content and implement impactful communications and digital organizing strategies to build community power and achieve advocacy wins, written policy initiatives ranging from police reform to election reform, and worked to enhance stakeholder engagement through fundraising campaigns and event planning.
Aniya is passionate about working for the community and possesses a desire to implement positive systemic change, which has been the driving force in her career – working to educate community members on the work that is being done as a way to ensure that the voices of underrepresented communities are being uplifted and not spoken over remains at the forefront of her mind. Now that she’s back on the East Coast, Aniya is eager to use her skillset and knowledge to help the community that raised her.
Aniya graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a double major in Composite Literature and Political Science, and a minor in African American Studies.
